If you’re in Brisbane like I am, you’ll definitely have the feeling that we’ve shaken the dullness of winter and autumn. Summer is nearly here with its warmth and light. If the sunshine and summery breezes are inspiring you to be productive and creative (like they’re doing to me), it might just be time to add a few flashy splashes of colour through your home. Here are a few of my tips for low cost, high impact ways to brighten up your home in time for the summer social season.

The Pantone colour for 2014 is Radiant Orchid, a luscious and luxuriant fuchsia-tinged purple. Although this colour’s year is almost done, it’s still the the perfect option if you’re looking to add a little more summery joy in your home or garden. Personally, I love Radiant Orchid teamed with other bright but slightly muted tones such as coral and tropical green. With this palette you will feel like you’re having a Mai Tai on a secluded Thai beach all summer long.

It’s really not hard to add these splashes of colour throughout your home. The usual suspects Freedom and Ikea have some great accessories you can work with easily. The beautifully bold colours feature prominently in geometric designs on rugs, porcelain vases and other decorative accents.

I’m most excited by the Missoni for Target collaboration though. Missoni are well known for their signature bold colours and patterns. This collaboration with Target will see their fantastic styling make an even bigger splash with the public this summer. Missoni have applied their chic magic to everything from cushions to candle holders. I really feel like this range is perfect and a must have for any summer loving home. Personally, I have my eyes on the beach umbrella – even if it won’t actually leave my back garden to make it to the beach. Like all of Target’s designer collaborations, the Missoni for Target range is a limited release, so get in quick. It’s available from today (Wed 8 October).

I can totally understand if you can’t bring yourself to buy another cushion or throw for your house, regardless of how beautiful or stylish it might look. Consider a stylish houseplant if your up to your eyeballs in decorative accents. Big, bold indoor plants are definitely one of the hottest home accessories this summer. For some lush foliage, try the broad-leaved Ficus Lyrata. Geraniums are perfect for some striking colour. Go for bromeliads if you’re not quite the green thumb – they’re an architecturally unique plant that’ll withstand even the greatest inattention. Even without your tender care, they’ll produce stunning flowers that’ll be a major talking point at your next garden party or barbecue.

To be honest, it’s hard to go wrong with this colour palette. They’re such warm, inviting colours that add a fun and relaxing vibe to every room, especially when used in the fun geometric designs that are still so popular.

Are you going to introduce Radiant Orchid, coral and tropical green into your home this summer? I’m interested to hear your plans. Or better yet, share a photo.
